Trip recap pt. 3: New York

Monday, August 17th, 2009

As my trip recap comes to an end, I realize that summer is almost over and that my adventure is already in the past. New york was the main and last part of my 3 week adventure. I had 9 days to enjoy it and this is how it went…

To get an artistic observation of the city check out Carlsbadcrawl’s coverage here

P.S. Don’t forget the OUTandABOUTs! (click on the links below)

Times Square, a fast paced, sensory overload. After a long day of walking, sightseeing, subway transfers and the hustle and bustle of NY, I needed to sit down. It’s a good thing they started putting lawn chairs in the streets. I think we sat in those chairs at least 3 hours. Luckily with a bottle of wine, twitter on my cell and my man by my side.

OUTandABOUT: New York, New York

timessqdaytimesqchairsnybriempirebrisubway

We stayed in Soho for the first 5 days (and Times square for the last 4) and visited Wooster St. (and all it’s loveliness), shopped on Broadway (I heart TopShop), enjoyed cup after cup of coffee at local cafes, explored Greenwich and observed the characters of Tompkins’s sq. park.

OUTandABOUT: East Village, NYtompkinspark

One of my favorite moments was at Strawberry fields in central park, where a Beatles tribute band jammed for 2+ hours, drawing in crowd after crowd.tributebandpeace

Brooklyn brought us lots to see and do, including a wander though Williamsburg.

OUTandABOUT: No sleep till Brooklyn

Last but not least, Coney Island! Best part was the Coney Island Circus Sideshow!

Trip recap pt. 2: Providence, RI

Friday, August 14th, 2009

providenceProvidence, Rhode Island was the second stop on our East coast adventure. We stayed with  friends for the weekend in their beautiful home near Brown University and RISD. We went on a long bike ride and got to see several neighborhoods, stopping at yard sales, local markets and small artist galleries along the way. The idea I had of an east coast neighborhood or of a east coast home was satisfied in Providence. I even got to shop at the “secret thrift store” …and yes it is quite a wonderful little secret. It was also our friend Sophie’s birthday, so we celebrated with a beautiful beach day and BBQ get together that night.

eastcoastbeach

We found her a wonderful necklace from this random shop called Curiosities, a buy/sell antique and oddities shop. We also attempted to view RISDs amazing art collection at the RISD Museum of art. I say attempted because it was our last day and we showed up 20 minutes before they closed! …but it’s all good, I saw Kandinsky, Warhol, Lichtenstein and Kentridge (what more can I ask for!). I think my favorite part of Providence was seeing Andre the giant stickers all over town, which Shepard Fairey started in Providence over 20 years ago, and the beautiful day we had at the beach.

New York recap coming MONDAY!!!

Trip recap pt. 1: Boston, MA

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Every summer I try to make a trip somewhere new. This summer I got to travel around the east coast (With my better half, Carlsbadcrawl) We backpacked for 3 weeks through Boston, Providence and New York. Check out some of the pictures from our first stop in Boston. Providence coverage coming Friday! To see OUTandABOUT coverage of Boston, click on the links below.

Boston, Massachusetts was full of lush greenery, rich red brick, community gardens and large parks. There were schools on every corner and a swarm of college students/guitar players (We stayed at the HI hostel by Berklee college of music)  roaming the streets until 2am. The town is also very touristy and the locals love their sports. Boston is very eco friendly too. Some of my favorite activities were having a drink at Bukowski’s  tavern (named after Charles Bukowski), relaxing in the grass at a nearby park, and shopping at the Garment district, by the pound!
