Trip recap pt. 1: Boston, MA

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Every summer I try to make a trip somewhere new. This summer I got to travel around the east coast (With my better half, Carlsbadcrawl) We backpacked for 3 weeks through Boston, Providence and New York. Check out some of the pictures from our first stop in Boston. Providence coverage coming Friday! To see OUTandABOUT coverage of Boston, click on the links below.

Boston, Massachusetts was full of lush greenery, rich red brick, community gardens and large parks. There were schools on every corner and a swarm of college students/guitar players (We stayed at the HI hostel by Berklee college of music)  roaming the streets until 2am. The town is also very touristy and the locals love their sports. Boston is very eco friendly too. Some of my favorite activities were having a drink at Bukowski’s  tavern (named after Charles Bukowski), relaxing in the grass at a nearby park, and shopping at the Garment district, by the pound!

Yesterday was my last day of school and today… I have yet another snapshot of the lovely teacher Lily Glass, while she was discussing our final projects (Drawings on a 3 dimension object, with your choice of a controversial topic). She is wearing a beautiful, vintage Jean Paul Gaultier dress, which reminds me of artist Piet Mondrian. Take a look at the similarities by clicking on the thumbnails below.

I have included my final project below. It is a piece representing the movement of street art, from the back alleys and gutters to the commercialized art world of galleries and museums, like a poor immigrant family fleeing from their country and sneaking into America, the land of opportunity. Suitcase from Vintage Sanctuary in Oceanside.

Monday evening I dusted off my bike and took her for an over due ride. It feels like just yesterday… when I had no car and depended solely on my bike for transportation.  Ol’ Besi Mae… if I were a bike, I’d want to be like you. She is a beautiful vintage, Japanese bike I found at the DAV.  Below I have posted some pictures in celebration of  longer days, being healthy and remembering that… to look good you must feel good. These photos capture fond memories from the last four years… mostly  with Besi, except for when she could not be packed up and shipped internationally.

How do I love thee, let me count the ways…

One womans trash is another womans treasure

outfitmeMy closet has bloomed with wonderful pieces from the many trips to my favorite stores and the many impulse buys that satisfy my current act of personal expression or rather, phase of style. Most clothing that I buy is a classic and I’ll cherish it forever, while others are bargains I couldn’t pass up. But then there are those unique, dare I say, trendy pieces that I buy and wear once, maybe twice and forget. Some still bearing tags. These are the pieces that wither in my closet and take up space. They are the clothes I don’t want to throw away but can’t seem to wear.

This is the beauty of buy, sell and trade stores. Flashback in Encinitas is my cash for clothes store of choice. With all the clothing I’ve sold there, I could have started my own store. In  return for my clothing they offer store credit or cash, I like to take  a little of both.

On this particular day, I gutted out my closet and forced myself to say goodbye to quite a bit; 1 jacket, 8 dresses, 3 tops, shorts, 1 skirt, 2 sweaters, 3 vests, 3 pairs of heels, ankle boots, 1 handbag, a chunky bracelet and a pair of sunglasses. They took everything but 3 things and I made a total of $80.00 cash or $120.00 in merchandise. I took 50/50 and scored on an amazing wicker, camera style handbag with a gold chain  strap! I’m not sure what year its from or who it was made by, there is no label,  it will forever be a mystery.
